What is the nature of carbon halogen bond in haloalkane CBSE class 12th chemistry

Nature of Carbon-Halogen Bond in Haloalkane

Due to electronegative nature of halogens, electron density of carbon halogen bond slightly moves towards halogen side to give slightly negative charge on halogen and slightly position charge on carbon.

Nature of carbon halogen bond in the haloalkane

Hence C-Halogen bond is polar in nature.

  • Size of halogen atom: I>Br>Cl>F
  • Bond Length: I>Br>Cl>F
  • Dipole Moment: Cl<F<Br<I
